Stability Analysis of the Volcanic Cave El Mirador (Galápagos Islands, Ecuador) Combining Numerical, Empirical and Remote Techniques

چکیده

El Mirador de los Túneles is a tube-shaped volcanic cave with sinuous structure in the Galápagos Islands formed due to cooled near-surface lava flows. Since this natural formation considered tourist site, large number of people frequent it daily; however, its safety conditions have not yet been defined by comprehensive geotechnical study. In research, stability analysis was carried out combining both empirical methodologies based on geomechanical classifications using Barton’s Q Index and recently created Cave Geomechanical (CGI), numerical modeling through finite element method. addition, three-dimensional modelling performed remote photogrammetric technique Structure from Motion (SfM) create calculation sections dimensions different critical parts cave. The results showed that there evidence instability subsidence along tunnel. Furthermore, parameters obtained methods complemented each other, resulting more realistic engineering representation subsurface environment. Finally, graph showing two CGI, addition Factors Safety (FoS) presented.

Hematology, serum chemistry, and serology of Galápagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador.

The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is an endangered species endemic to the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. In 2003 and 2004, 195 penguins from 13 colonies on the islands of Isabela and Fernandina in the Galápagos archipelago were examined. Genetic sexing of 157 penguins revealed 62 females and 95 males. Hematology consisted of packed cell volume (n = 134), white blood cell differentials ...

Mitochondrial DNA from El Mirador Cave (Atapuerca, Spain) Reveals the Heterogeneity of Chalcolithic Populations

Previous mitochondrial DNA analyses on ancient European remains have suggested that the current distribution of haplogroup H was modeled by the expansion of the Bell Beaker culture (ca 4,500-4,050 years BP) out of Iberia during the Chalcolithic period. However, little is known on the genetic composition of contemporaneous Iberian populations that do not carry the archaeological tool kit definin...

Cryptic diversity in Black rats Rattus rattus of the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Human activity has facilitated the introduction of a number of alien mammal species to the Galápagos Archipelago. Understanding the phylogeographic history and population genetics of invasive species on the Archipelago is an important step in predicting future spread and designing effective management strategies. In this study, we describe the invasion pathway of Rattus rattus across the Galápa...

Long-term volcanic hazard assessment on El Hierro (Canary Islands)

Long-term hazard assessment, one of the bastions of risk-mitigation programs, is required for land-use planning and for developing emergency plans. To ensure quality and representative results, long-term volcanic hazard assessment requires several sequential steps to be completed, which include the compilation of geological and volcanological information, the characterisation of past eruptions,...
